Can You Lay Resin Over Existing Concrete? Everything You Need to Know

One of the most common questions we receive. In many cases, yes — but there are important conditions to check first. We explain the process and the limitations.

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is: "Can you lay resin over my existing concrete driveway?" The short answer is yes — in many cases. But there are some important conditions, and getting this assessment right is critical to the long-term success of the installation.

When Resin Can Be Laid Over Concrete

Resin bound surfacing can be successfully installed over an existing concrete base when:

  • The concrete is structurally sound. No significant cracking, heaving, or deterioration.
  • The surface is well-bonded. No delamination, spalling, or loose areas.
  • There is adequate fall. The existing concrete drains correctly and there are no persistent puddle areas.
  • The surface is clean and contamination-free. Oil, paint, or chemical contamination can prevent adhesion.
  • When these conditions are met, overlaying the existing concrete saves significant cost compared to full excavation — typically £500–£1,500 on a standard driveway.

    When Excavation Is Required

There are situations where we recommend or require full excavation, regardless of the existing surface:

  • Cracked or broken concrete. Cracks in the concrete base will reflect through the resin overlay (called 'reflective cracking') within 1–3 years.
  • Contamination that can't be removed. Oil-soaked concrete won't bond properly with resin.
  • Poor or missing drainage. If the existing surface holds water, overlaying won't solve the drainage issue.
  • Insufficient depth. If the existing concrete doesn't allow enough height for the resin layer plus any edging detail required.
  • The Assessment Process

We always assess the existing concrete surface at the free site survey before recommending an approach. We check for:

  • Structural integrity (hammer test and visual inspection)
  • Any areas of delamination or loose material
  • Surface contamination
  • Drainage falls and current drainage performance
  • If we recommend overlay, we'll confirm that in your quote. If we recommend excavation, we'll explain exactly why.

    What About Old Block Paving?

Block paving is generally not suitable as a base for resin bound surfacing. The individual blocks move relative to each other, which causes the resin to crack at the joint lines. In almost all cases, block paving needs to be removed and replaced with a solid base before resin can be installed.
