Choosing the Right Aggregate for Your Resin Driveway

The aggregate you choose defines the colour, texture, and character of your resin driveway. Here's a practical guide to making the right choice for your property.

The aggregate — the natural stone chippings blended with resin to create the surface — is the single most visible element of your resin bound driveway. It determines the colour, texture, and overall character of the finished surface. Here's how to choose wisely.

What Is Aggregate?

In resin bound surfacing, aggregate refers to small natural stone chippings (typically 1–3mm in size for driveways, or 2–5mm for larger areas) that are coated in UV-stable resin and trowel-applied to create the finished surface. The colour of the aggregate is the colour of your driveway.

The Main Aggregate Types

Rounded vs Angular

  • Rounded aggregates (river gravels, tumbled stone): Smooth to touch, gentler underfoot, slightly lighter in colour.
  • Angular aggregates (crushed stone, granite): More angular appearance, slightly more grip underfoot.
  • For residential driveways, both work well — it's largely an aesthetic preference.

    Natural Stone Aggregates

Buff and Honey tones (sandstone, limestone-based blends): The most popular choice in Yorkshire. Complement the natural stone used in most Yorkshire homes. Warm and welcoming.

Grey tones (granite, basalt, recycled glass blends): Clean, contemporary, suits modern homes and grey render. Particularly popular in urban settings.

Brown and toffee (brown flint, red/brown blends): Rich, earthy quality. Works beautifully with red brick and darker stone properties.

White and light cream (white marble, quartz): Light, bright, premium appearance. More visible when marked — requires more frequent cleaning.

    Aggregate Size

  • 1–3mm: Standard for domestic driveways and patios. Smooth, even texture.
  • 3–5mm: Slightly more textured appearance. Sometimes used for larger areas where a more rustic finish is desired.
  • Getting It Right: Our Process

  • Sample matching: We bring physical aggregate samples to the site survey. Look at them against your house in natural daylight.
  • Batch consistency: We always source from the same batch or supplier for a project to ensure colour consistency across the full area.
  • Adjacent elements: Consider your roof tiles, window frames, front door colour, and edging material when choosing — the driveway should complement all of these.
  • Neighbourhood context: Yorkshire villages and market towns look best with warm, natural tones. Urban and contemporary settings often suit crisp greys.
